Memorial Day Fun

Our family drove to Illinois to spend time with family over Memorial Day. On Saturday, we drove to Angela's apartment in Cape Girardeau, MO and went to a "zoo" right down the road from her place. The "zoo" had a lot of very exotic animals. Brittany loved feeding many of the animals. The baby camel below was making quite a bit of noise which scared Eden. She stayed out of the barn from that point on. This was as close as Eden got to the petting corral.

Eden's Grandma Sue made her an adorable Dutch costume 2 years ago. Because of weather and other circumstances, we were unable to make it to a Tulip Time parade until this year. Luckily, her costume still fit her! We met Eden's cousins Zach, Kenzie, and Ethan for lunch at Russ' and then watched some of the Tulip Time parade. As you can see from the pictures below, Eden was not in the mood to pose for a picture with her cousins. However, she absolutely LOVED the parade.

A Visit to the Children's Museum

During my mid-winter break in February Eden and I spent a morning at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum. This was Eden's first visit to the museum and she was in awe. She ran from exhibit to exhibit and did NOT want to leave.

Blizzard 2011

Well, the Blizzard of 2011 arrived on Groundhog Day, February 2. The storm was predicted to bring 14-20 inches of snow in 9 hours and boy, did it deliver! When we woke up on Tuesday AM, there was close to 15 inches of new snow in our yard. Luckily, I had a snow day and didn't have to step outside at all. Sean wasn't so lucky. He ventured into work, but could not get into the building because of the snow drifts against the door of the building. He came back home and actually got stuck in our driveway! He spent the next 2 hours snowblowing the driveway.

I took this picture of Eden standing in front of our slider door with the snow piled up on the deck behind her. That's a LOT of snow!

I got another snow day the following day and took Eden outside to get some pictures of her in the record-breaking snow. We didn't stay out long, just long enough to be amazed!

Eden tried to climb up onto the snow, but it was a little too high for her with her snowpants on. I tried lifting her up to stand her in the snow but she wanted nothing to do with that.

Mornings At The Harris House

On a typical weekday morning at our house, I'm up around 6 AM getting ready for work. Eden usually wakes up between 6 and 6:30. She gets a cup of milk and a bowl of dry cereal while she watches Sesame Street until I'm ready to get her ready for daycare. On this particular morning, she got comfortable on her bean bag with her hat on and her blankie around her neck. So silly!

Emmy turned 3 on January 24. We celebrated with Emmy at her party on the 23rd. She looked so cute in all of her accessories; her choice of course!

Emmy sat quietly and looked at the stickers in her new coloring book while the party went on around her.

Emmy did a great job of blowing out the candle on her cake, with a little guidance from Ava.

Then it was time for some of the accessories to come off!

Sean had given Eden a new coat, snowpants, and sleds for Christmas. We haven't had any snow until today so we went outside to take advantage of the little bit of snow we had. Eden's all bundled up and ready to go!

Addison turned 6 on New Year's Day. We celebrated at a Tinkerbell themed party. She had so much fun and is really growing up.

Dad got a hat to go with the car in the garage. He was pretty excited about it!

I just love Addi's face in this picture. She can't figure out why her dad got soup and why he was so happy about it. Really, it was in the bag just to add weight.

My mom gave all the kids these reindeer antlers. Eden was such a cute little reindeer.

Annual Molegraaf Sjoelen Tourney

Our annual Molegraaf Sjoelen (Shuffleboard) Tournament was held on December 23. The tournament was played by Molegraaf family members young and old.

Grandpa Mole took his turn in the tournament. He still has the touch!

"My" Mark did great this year! He was in the Final Four. Laura was really hoping he would win the trophy so it could be displayed on the head table at their wedding next year.

Grandpa presented the trophy to Sean who won for the 4th year in a row! Way to go honey!

Derek won the runner-up trophy this year. He and Missy were both in the Final Four.

Illinois Birthday Party

Eden turned 2 on November 18. We had family over to help us celebrate. She was so excited for her party and squealed with joy at every gift she opened.

Sean's sister Angela gave birth to a healthy baby boy on October 25. Elijah Dean Revelle weighed 8lbs. and was 20.5 inches long. We can't wait to meet him over Thanksgiving weekend! Congrats Angela and Mike.

Trick or Treating X 2

With Halloween being on a Saturday this year, Eden got to trick or treat twice. When we first tried her costume on earlier in the week, Eden took a while to warm up to it. But once the kids in costume started showing up at our door, she wanted to get out there herself. Of course, we think she's the cutest bunny around!

The weekend before Halloween, Sean helped Eden carve her first pumpkin. She sat at the table and played with a little pumpkin and a spoon the whole time Sean was working.

This past Saturday, August 14, our family was honored to celebrate the wedding of Sean's sister Sara and Matt in southern Illinois.

Although the temperatures were high (about 100, with a heat index of 110) the day and the wedding were beautiful. Matt and Sara's wedding ceremony was held at Blue Sky winery, a gorgeous setting for their big day!

Matt and Sara's reception was held at the VFW in Anna, Illinois.

Sean had the tremendous honor of walking his sister down the aisle. He was one proud big brother!

Todd and some of his buddies were responsible for the food at the reception and it was delicious! Robin worked so hard to help Sara pull off her perfect wedding and looked stunning doing it!

Although this picture is blurry, it totally captures Eden's mood at the reception. She had a blast! I think she ran around that dance floor for at least an hour! She was in her glory.

Our Flower Girl

Eden had the privilege of being a flower girl at the wedding of Sean's sister Sara and Matt. I was really nervous about how she was going to do; especially with the heat! Luckily, she did a great job! There was no way she was wearing her big slip and headband, but she looked adorable walking down the aisle with her pacifier and blankie holding Brittany's hand. She smiled behind her pacifier the whole way!

When she got near the end of the aisle and stepped down the last couple of steps you could hear her say, "I step". Then she saw her Grandma Robin and said, "Hi!". She was adorable and we were so proud of her.

Our Airport Visit

This past Tuesday, my sisters and I took the kids to see my dad at work. My mom came along for the fun, too! The kids were amazed to see all of the planes up close. They all got a chance to sit in a little plane...some enjoyed it more than others.

Brave Avary was the only one who dared to put on the headphones. I see pilot in her future!

4th of July

Sean and I had some friends and family over to celebrate the 4th of July. The day was beautiful for playing on the beach, in the water, and enjoying fireworks.

Some of the kids lined up all of our buckets on the beach. They used them to hold minnows they had caught. I just loved the colorful line of the buckets on the sand.

Father's Day 2010

Sean and I hosted our families for Father's Day this year. Sean grilled chicken, the kids played in the water, the guys did some fishing, and we all had a fun day on the beach.

On June 12, I had the honor and privilege of hosting a baby shower for my friend Lindsay. Lindsay and her husband Jason are expecting a baby girl mid-July. Lindsay is an absolutely adorable pregnant woman and got some beautiful hand-made gifts at her shower. We can't wait to meet baby Girl Smithers; Eden is so excited to have another friend!

One thing Sean and I have noticed about Eden is that she loves to organize things and move objects from one place to another...to another...to another. One day last week she was very quiet and busy while I was making dinner. I went upstairs to see what she was up to and found her very carefully placing her dominoes on the spaces between the rungs of our railing. I can only hope she is this organized and creative with keeping her bedroom clean some day! She is something else!

Brigid's Baby Shower

Yesterday, I went to a baby shower for my good friend, Brigid. The shower was hosted by a friend of hers and was absolutely charming. Brigid is decorating her nursery with a woodland/owl theme and if you know Brigid, you know she loves a theme. Therefore, the baby shower did not disappoint and followed the theme exactly. The hostess of the shower thought of every detail and every time you turned around, there was something new to take in. Here are a few pictures of some of the decor. Once again, I did not get a great picture of the guest of honor, but she looked adorable! Congratulations, Brigid!

The table in the dining room was exquisite. Moss covered the table, greenery hung from the chandelier, and woodland creatures made from real wood decorated the table.

This was the table in the breakfast nook. The centerpiece was gorgous. Can you see the little porcupine?

This was one of the table settings. Our placecards were leaf die-cuts and our favors were little evergreens.

This was the dessert display complete with a leaf-wrapped baby on the cake, owl cupcakes, and caramels shaped like acorns. Too cute!

On Christmas Eve, we celebrated with Sean's dad and Sue, Andy and Mary and the kids, and Katie and Dave and the kids. We had delicious food (of course!) and a great time. Eden's pappy made her a beautiful toy box complete with a chalkboard and a whiteboard to keep her entertained. Thanks everyone! Eden in front of her new toy box!

The Annual Molegraaf Sjoelen Tournament

Everyone got in on the action at our Molegraaf Christmas party this year! Once again, Sean took home the trophy with a score of 86! Kurt was the runner-up this year. Ava and Jack count the points.

The trophy presentation. My Grandpa usually presents the trophy but he and Grandma were unable to make it to the party this year. Grandpa was in the hospital with pneumonia earlier in the month and still wasn't feeling up to getting out of the house. We missed them and look forward to having them at our party again next year!

Sean's step-sister Katie gave birth to Ethan David Moss on December 9! Ethan weighed 8 lbs., 10 oz. and was 21 inches long. Both mom and baby are healthy and doing great! Congratulations Katie and Dave!

We traveled down to Sean's mom's to celebrate Thanksgiving, Eden's birthday, Brittany's birthday (the 23rd), and Sean's birthday (the 26th). We had a fantastic visit. Eden loved celebrating her birthday twice!

Eden Turns 1!

Eden turned one on November 18. We celebrated with a party with family. She loved playing with everyone and opening all of her gifts.

Sean and I had no idea how much Eden would change our lives when she was born. She has brought so much joy into our lives and we can't imagine life without her. We are amazed at how much she's grown and everything she's learned in a year. We love her so much and are so grateful to God for giving us the honor of being her parents.

Sean really wanted Eden to be a pumpkin for her first Halloween since she's our little pumpkin. We thought she was absolutely adorable in her costume, of course! Unfortunately, not many other people got to see her. We had plans to go visit some of her cousins but because of an ear infection, we had to stay home. She liked helping us hand out candy at home. We'll try again next year!

We put Eden back in her costume the next day when Grandma Mary and Grandpa Larry stopped over.

Brooks Lake

In August, we once again spent a week at a cottage on Brooks Lake in Newaygo. We spent the week relaxing in the sun, sitting by the fire, eating great food, and playing in the water.

We tried to keep Eden in a pack 'n play on the beach. It worked for a little while, but she soon wanted to be out playing in the water and trying to keep up with the other kids.

Much Needed Update

I know it has been a LONG time since I have updated but there have been several reasons for that, one of which I will elaborate on here. (The others are mostly because of our adorable daughter who is now mobile and VERY BUSY. )

As most people know by now, my job teaching 3rd grade at West was very short-lived. The week before school began I was informed that there was a possibility I would be moved to another new building and grade level. This was due to low student numbers at 3rd grade at West and the fact that I was the lowest on the seniority totem-pole at my new building.

I and many others prayed that this additional move would not take place. I had worked very long and hard all summer to move from Huntington Woods to West and prepare for my 19 3rd grade students there. I had met many of my new students and families at our Open House and did not want to say goodbye to them. I began the first day of school as if the impending move was not going to happen. I began building relationships with my 3rd graders and creating the kind of classroom environment where students felt safe, loved, and learning could take place.

However, my prayers were not answered in the way I had hoped. The numbers needed to keep me in my 3rd grade position at West were not there. I had to make the move to Kindergarten at Gladiola. Although this move was unsettling and trying for me as a teacher, many people have helped me with the transition. My mom, sisters, cousin Lisa, her daughter Emma, and friends Clare and Brigid all gave up part of their Saturday to help me move and unpack in my new classroom (THANKS AGAIN!). The good thing about already having moved once, is that I had been able to get rid of a lot of things I no longer used and had organized everything that was left. Not only did I have to switch classrooms, but curriculum as well. After teaching 3rd grade for the past 8 years, kindergarten was entirely foreign to me. This huge change made me quite apprehensive. However, I received (and continue to receive) help from several other teachers in the district who have helped me wrap my brain around the new age level and curriculum.

Now, almost one semester in to my first year of being a kindergarten teacher, I feel like I finally have a chance to breathe. Kindergarteners are definitely a LOT less independent than 3rd graders. This gives me basically NO time to get anything accomplished while the students are in the room (besides teaching, helping, tying shoes, zipping coats, etc.). I also have double the amount of students because I have an AM section and a PM section; 41 kiddos in all. I have spent more weekends and nights working than I ever did before simply trying to stay one step ahead of the curriculum, planning, and evaluating assessments.

Although this year has not been easy, I am thankful that I do have a job. As many have heard through the local news, Wyoming has had to make mid-year cuts because of declining enrollment and budget cuts at the state level. Many of my friends and colleagues will either have to switch positions (often switching buildings and grade levels) or be laid-off at mid year. Please pray that this year continues to go well and that I still have my sanity come June!

All Moved In

Well, we are officially moved into our new house...and we love it! Although we are nowhere near settled, we're here, and that's good enough for now.
Sean's favorite part of the new house is the fishing, of course! He's already caught some bass, catfish, and lots of bluegill. Todd has already fried some of it up for us!
Sean would like to have more time to fish, but he's been very busy getting our other house ready to rent, meeting potential renters, and gearing up for his new job. Sean is starting with Bluewater Group on August 3. He will basically be doing the same job; just with a different company. He is really excited about the change.

I always knew Sean would be a good dad, but I am just amazed at what a GREAT dad he is! Eden is definitely Daddy's little girl and Sean would have it no other way.

Sean is the only one who can make her laugh the way he does and her face lights up whenever she sees him! He works so hard to make sure we have everything we need (and a few things we want!). We are truly blessed.

On Saturday, Sean and I drove to Grand Blanc to celebrate with Clare and Jon Shubert on their wedding day. This was the first time we had left Eden overnight so we were a bit nervous. However, the wedding was beautiful, the reception was amazing, and of course, Eden did just great at Grandma's!

An Amazing Story

Clare and Jon got engaged in February of last year. They both knew they wanted to have their reception at the house where Jon grew up and where his parents still lived. Jon's Dad had built their house himself several years ago.

Just before Thanksgiving, Jon's mom arrived home and noticed something wasn't quite right. When she went to open the door of their house, she noticed it was extremely hot. There had been an electrical fire and the house was a total loss. Although there was not much damage from actual flames, the intense heat wreaked havoc on the house and killed the family dogs. The house needed to be torn down.

Clare and Jon decided to still have their reception at this location, however...and everyone who attended was amazed!

After beginning building in March of this year, the house is finished, and is absolutley immaculate! It was a beautiful setting for Clare and Jon's reception!

The Little Things

Clare did a fantastic job planning the entire reception down to the last detail. Everywhere you turned, there was something perfect to fit the day and the theme.

Each guest received homemade strawberry jam as a favor. Clare, Brigid, and their friend Martha made over 200 jars of jam themselves!

These lights were hanging from the top of the tent. They gave the space a summery, romantic feel.
There were flip-flops available for anyone who wanted them. Sean found a place to store his!

Fun at Grandma Robin's

We took our first road trip as a family last weekend. We made the eight hour drive down to Sean's mom's. Eden did very well on the car ride and was an angel our entire stay. She loved being able to spend time with all of her relatives!

Bath time with Grandma was definitely a hit! She loved it (I think Grandma did, too!).

Grandma was so good to Eden. She really gave us a break. Thanks Grandma Robin! We love you!

Our New House!

Sean and I bought a house in Jenison this past week! We are so excited to be finally moving out of our house on Cleveland. We found the house on Monday, went through it on Tuesday night, made an offer that night, and signed the papers on Wednesday morning. Inspections will be this week Tuesday and we hope to close before July 2!

This is a view of the front of our house. Sean is really pumped about finally having a garage. We have a very large front and back yard. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, 2 family rooms (with fireplaces), and a nice sized dining area and kitchen. It will definitely need some updating, but it is very clean and well maintained.

We have a large tiered backyard with a couple of shade trees and 2 decks! Sean is thinking he may have to get a riding lawn mower to take care of this beautiful yard. Our favorite part of the house is...

THE BEACH!!

We can't believe that we have our own little beach on a private spring-fed lake. The lake is about 7 acres and we hear it is great for fishing and swimming. Although we won't be able to take our boat out on this lake, Sean can't wait to start fishing!

My New Position

Yesterday was certainly an emotional day for all displaced WPS staff. Our involuntary transfer meeting began at 9 and there was definitely tension in the air. As the meeting progressed, you could hear people crying as they made their choices (some out of happiness; some out of disappointment), cheering for their colleagues, and the words "No positions available" broke everyone's heart.

I went into the meeting hoping for a 3rd grade position at West. I was NOT hopeful that I would get it however. There were several people choosing ahead of me who also wanted to be at West and my chances did not look good. After praying about what decision I would make for several months, I came to the meeting with my list of possiblities in order of preference, with 3rd grade at West being my top pick.

As it got closer to my turn, some of my closest friends from HW chose West. My teaching partner, Sarah, chose 3rd grade at West and there was only one more opening left there at that point- a 3rd grade.

My friend Deb had been telling me for weeks that 3rd grade at West was her first choice. She was going to be choosing before me so I could see the position I wanted most slipping away. Then, Deb's name was called. She said, "3rd grade...Parkiew"! I really couldn't believe what I had heard. My mouth dropped and I gasped. Sarah and I started crying immediatly. I knew then that I would get the other 3rd grade at West!

After talking to Deb later, she admitted that she chose the Parkview position because she is nearing retirement (3-5 more years) and didn't want to split Sarah and I up. How gracious of her! I am so grateful to her for being so unselfish and thoughtful. Thank you, Deb!

What does this mean for me:

Over the next two weeks, I will finish packing up my current classroom.
In August (although hopefully earlier) I will get into my new classroom to unpack, set up, and begin planning.
Sarah and I will be teaching the same grade level, but will not be partnering in the same way we did at HW. We will still be able to do many things together.
I am a happy 3rd grade teacher!

Bitter Sweet Week

As a teacher, you look forward to the last week of school almost more than your students! After a year of planning, copying, testing, grading, and dealing with the many catastrophes that befall 8 and 9 year olds, summer vacation is always a welcome break.

However, this year is a bit different. Our last morning with students is tomorrow and we won't be coming back to what we know next year. Now the packing begins (although it really started about 2 weeks ago)!

Many have been wondering what I will be doing next year. On Friday at 9 am, I will be at a meeting where I will choose my position and building for next year (and hopefully longer). Basically, there will be 2 lists presented on 2 screens in front of us. One list shows us the available jobs, while the other lists all of the displaced staff members (about 180 in all) in order of seniority. Then, starting with the person at the top of the list, each person picks the job they want from those that are available. I am about half way down the list. My hope is that I will be able to continue teaching 2nd or 3rd grade. Beyond that, anything else would be completely new so it probably wouldn't matter!

Please pray for me to make the best decision on Friday. I will update you then!

My First Mother's Day

After hoping and praying for so long to be a mom, this first Mother's Day was very special for me. Eden is such a tremendous blessing and I thank God every day that he has entrusted me with her. I can't wait to see all the great things I will get to be a part of just because I'm her mom! I love you Eden!
